Islamic Union Students Protest Massacre of Libyans by Gaddafi Regime
A number of university students from across the country staged a demonstration outside the United Nations office in Tehran to voice their strong opposition to the massacre of Libyan protesters by the regime of Muammar Qaddafi, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported on Friday.
Islamic students were holding up posters of Qaddafi, U.S. President Barack Obama, and Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, which were marked with an “invalid” stamp.
They shouted slogans “Down with the United States” and “Down with Israel”.
The students also held up placards saying “Free Imam Musa al-Sadr”.
Al-Sadr is a senior Shia cleric who vanished without a trace in 1978 and many holds the Qaddafi government responsible for his disappearance.
Following is an excerpt of the statement which was read out at the end of the gathering:
“The Islamic Union of Iranian Students’ Association (IUISA) condemns the crimes committed by the Libyan dictator and expresses sympathy with the Libyan people, the families of the martyrs, and all free-thinkers in the word. The IUISA also calls on the international forums to fulfill their responsibilities in this regard and prosecute Qaddafi as soon as possible.”
