After the Friday’s terror attacks in Paris, President Francois Hollande stated that “France is at war.” He also vowed that “France will destroy IS.” Dutch Prime-Minister Mark Rutte used similar words when he said on Saturday, “we are at war with ISIS. We are not at war with a country, a belief or with Islam.” During a session in Dutch parliament, Geert Wilders was more explicit: “Of course, it’s war… a 1400-year war.”

Since 9/11, thousands of Islamic-inspired terrorist attacks have been carried out in the Middle East, in Israel, Asia, Europe, the United States, Africa and even in China. However, members of the European political establishment still seem to be surprised whenever such disaster strikes an European capital. As usual, we are again reassured by “experts” that this has nothing to do with Islam. These crimes against humanity are just carried out by a bunch of “extremists”. Dividing Islam in a moderate or extremist version is the usual narrative by which Western leaders or “experts” try to fool the public and appease the Muslims alike. It’s not going to work. Islam has its own set of rules.

Time to read some words from the past, when there wasn’t an Islamic State, but there was… Islam. And although this piece is about Islam as the source of the Arab-Israeli conflict, it was also a prophecy about Islam and the rest of the world. In 1955, Dr. Azriel Carlebach wrote the following article which was originally published in the Israeli Hebrew-language daily newspaper “Ma’ariv” on October 7th, 1955. It was reprinted in 2012 by ruthfullyyours.com. It’s translated and reprinted here for your convenience.

arabism islamism

The source of conflict between us and the Arabs, is not a matter of borders, but the Islamic psychology. The Arabs are the sons of Islam, and with it, a worldview, you cannot talk. With Islam you do not live side by side in peace.”

Clear and simple truth is, that between the Islamic world and the culture of the Western world there is not one common word, and there was not, will not and can not be any understanding. This does not mean religion, every religion can be good or bad, according to what its followers will fulfill or neglect its ethical principles. It means the influence of Islam on social life, sense of the world and relationships with other human beings.

Fifty, sixty generations, one after another have been brought up in Islam to rape the human nature — not to use the power of thought, not to want individual rights, not to lust, not to demand, not to stand tall. In the Islamic world the dim will rules, the dark, the inexplicable of Allah. A pedantic and capricious ruler, hidden and sickening … this is the essence of the Islamic religion — not to ask. A person undertakes this faith in what he says: “Allah il Allah”, not in what he is convinced from an idea, but in what he accepts for himself as a tyrant.

Such faith by its very nature cannot be spread through intellectual persuasion or supreme moral, this is the work of the mind and the body — and can only be distributed by physical force. And therefore there is a constant holy war to be waged against the “non-believers” and bring them into the fold of the right faith with the force of the sword of el-Islam-Allah that loves blood … Never there is greater danger in itself, but the finger on the trigger. And a small bomb in the hands of one madman can destroy an entire philosophers’ Community.

The danger of Islam for the West is far greater than communism. Because within the Communist religion there are multiple educated nucleus than within the Muslim religion. With Communism one can talk about the basics of give and take, because of its materialism it considers also reality, measuring forces, formulating requirements, considering proposals according to feasibility.

All these data do not exist in Islam. Muslims have never agreed on anything, whatever it is, even among themselves … and they cannot materialize anything — not only in the matters concerning Israel; the entire mighty Muslim world could not make an agreement on a common postage stamp. Their reactions — on anything — have no relevance to common sense. They are all emotional lacking calculation, momentary, baseless … with all you can talk “business”, even with the devil, but not with Allah …

We did — and continue doing — an unforgiveable and silly mistake, if we paint a picture in front of the world of Arabs who do not exist at all and who are merely the wishes of our imagination. And we are adding insult to injury when we distort the image and reduce the argument of the border conflict between Israel and its neighbors.

Above all — it does not correspond to reality. The source of conflict is not a matter of borders, but Islamic psychology. If Westerners were our neighbors, if they were Protestants — long ago we would have lived in peace with them as the Norwegians and Swedes do. Or if they were even Catholics — our relationship could have worked out the way they had between the French and the English in Canada, and in many South American countries among themselves. But here we have been trying for fifty years, in any way possible, to reach some kind of an agreement, which never appeared on the horizon even as a shadow of hope — meaning that the matter does not lie in actions and facts and fears.

It lies only in the fact that the Arabs are the sons of Islam. And with them, in our worldview, it is impossible to negotiate. No matter who, no matter what, with Islam you do not live side by side in peace.

Besides — presenting the dispute as a conflict between two similar parties equips the Arabs with weapons of argument that is not theirs. If the debate with them is really political, then there are arguments for both sides. Then we appear as who had come to a land that was all Arabic and we occupied it and have put ourselves as a wedge, and we loaded on them refugees, and we pose danger to them with our military, etc., etc. — and one can justify one side or another. In other words, in this play, rational and political problem, it becomes understandable to the European minds — against us.

The Arabs claim rights that are even acceptable by Western opinion in an ordinary legal battle. But in reality, who knows better than us, that this is not the source of their hostile attitude. All these political and social concepts are never their concepts.

Conquest by the sword, in their own eyes, in the eyes of Islam, is not at all wrong; On the contrary, it is considered privilege and proof of superior ownership. Concern for refugees, dispossessed brothers is not in their thoughts; Allah expelled, Allah will take care.

A Muslim politician is never upset about such (unless catastrophe endangers his personal status). And if it was not occupation and if it were not refugees — they would have opposed to us just in the same manner. About what we discuss with them on the basis of Western concepts — we dressed savages with European court dress. And that way — instead of alerting the peoples of the world, we anesthetize them.

This is the basis of our mistake, in my humble opinion; the secret of our isolation and our failures.

That we, we cry about the stab in our flesh — not the abyss that is open for peace in the world. That we ask for a bandage for the bite we suffered, and we do not warn: Here spins a crazy dog between my legs!

What is it like? — If, when Hitler came to power, we would have said that he is indeed the case of an anti-Semite, but usually he is the founder of a wise and respected religion that one must not fear — and our hands are extended to him in peace, and then, we desire to arrange between us the private petty accounts, and then call him for a peace covenant, help him to develop his teachings and spread his influence …

We are not only sinners in our struggle, the existence of this country and the lives of our sons and daughters, we are sinners to the entire world if we do not address the simple truth, that lies in the heart of all of us, including Government spokespersons, chanting statements of peace — the truth is that the spirit of Islam is the enemy.

Islam is not only our enemy because we are sitting here by incident. It is an enemy to us, even if we sat at the north Pole. Because it is the enemy of all free people. It is the enemy of all the fertile mind, all good heated initiative, every creative idea. It is the archenemy of every Jew, every Christian — and every Muslim. All of which will be put in his hand, whether a wooden sword or steel tank, or water pitcher — becomes a threat to his fellow human beings.

It did not ever contribute or will contribute anything at all for the best; it did not produce even one human image that marched the world forward, in any area whatsoever; it is the darkness, the reaction, it is the prison to 500 million tortured people; it is the landmine, the inherent obstacle to peace in the world.

And as long as we do not make effort and instill this knowledge in the free world’s mind — we will always be the first victims of a lack of knowledge.

Dr. Azriel Carlebach (November 7, 1909 — February 12, 1956) was born in the city of Leipzig, Germany. In 1927 he immigrated to Palestine, but as from 1929 on Carlebach lived again in Germany and studied in the Frederick William University of Berlin and the University of Hamburg, receiving a degree as a doctor of law. In 1937 Carlebach immigrated to Palestine under an appointment as foreign correspondent of Yidishe Post. In the same year he became a journalist at the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, afterwards becoming its editor. In early 1939 Carlebach travelled again to Warsaw, meeting with friends there — not knowingly to see many of them for the last time. He was a prominent journalist and editorial writer during the period of Jewish settlement in British Palestine and during the early days of the state of Israel. He was the first editor of Israel’s two largest newspapers, beginning with Yediot Ahronot, which he left to found Ma’ariv.
